On 6 July 2021, emails received from the US Embassy in London has confirmed there is a new policy in place for National Interest Exception (NIE) for entry to the USA. The email received states the below:

All National Interest Exceptions (NIE) are now valid for 12 months and multiple entries as long as you are traveling for the same purpose for which you originally received an NIE.  If you have received a previous NIE in the past 12 months, it will remain valid until one year after its original approval date.  You do not need to apply for a new NIE until your original exception expires. The determination of your eligibility for admission to the United States will be made by U.S. Custom and Border Protection (CBP) officials. We cannot issue you a new approval letter. The determination of your eligibility for admission to the United States will be made by U.S. Custom and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the Port of Entry. No assurances regarding admission can be given in advance as all travelers are required to establish their eligibility for admission and are subject to questioning

Whereas previous NIEs were issued for single entry for up to 30 days (often much less), this new policy provides a clear change in approach and provides a lifeline for UK and USA trans-Atlantic businesses, whose trade is valued at an estimated $273.0 billion per annum. Although no assurances for entry can be made and the final determination will be made by Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) Officer, this new policy should be celebrated by providing those businesses and senior executives with the ability to plan for the short term and to overcome many issues which have been experienced by these businesses due to the restrictions on entry.
