The Trump administration has indefinitely halted the processing of immigrant visas for individuals from 75 countries, representing one of its most extensive initiatives to limit legal entry routes into the United States.

The suspension, which is set to commence on January 21, specifically targets applicants that officials consider likely to become a “public charge” – individuals whom they suspect may depend on government assistance for essential needs. As per a state department cable, this comprehensive list encompasses every significant region globally, including nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

The cable indicates that exceptions are made for dual nationals holding a valid passport from a country not included on the list, or if the applicant can prove that their travel would serve an “America First” national interest. In cases where a visa has already been approved but not yet printed, the consular officer is required to “refuse the case.”
